We are open because your mobility is essential.

We are open because the dedication to our patients has brought our company together to ensure every patient is safe when they enter our doors and satisfied when they leave.

We are screening each patient upon arrival to protect your safety. This includes taking the patient's temperature and checking for cough or shortness of breath. We are also making sure patients have not traveled to cities with high infection rates or been in contact with any individuals who have tested positive for covid-19.

We are following CDC and OSHA guidelines for infection control and maintaining a risk-free environment. All of our practitioners are wearing required protective equipment, so don't be alarmed–this is for your safety. Additionally, we are sanitizing every surface including chair handles, light switches, door handles, bathrooms, parallel bars, and all other surfaces before and after each patient visit. At the end of the day we are also deep cleaning patient care and employee areas.

We are prepared and committed to keeping your scheduled appointments.

If you currently have an appointment for a new evaluation for custom fit orthoses, prostheses and pedorthics, or require adjustments where skin integrity and pain are involved, we highly suggest to keep those appointments and see a practitioner.

If you are unable to leave your home and require help from a practitioner, please call your Scheck & Siress location to see if there are teleconferencing options such as Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, or Duo available.

We will reach out prior to your appointment and please make sure to follow any instructions provided.

FOR LAKE BLUFF PATIENTS, PLEASE CONTINUE TO CALL 847-558-6758 FOR YOUR APPOINTMENTS.

We are all in this together, and we look forward to keeping you mobile.

Whether you are adapting to a new way of life or looking for ways to enhance your current lifestyle, we have the experience and knowledge to help you move forward with confidence.

What Are Orthotics & Prosthetics?

Orthotics and prosthetics are assistive devices that help people regain mobility and live the kind of life they choose despite the temporary setbacks that accompany a range of physical issues. Both orthotics and prosthetics can vastly improve a person's quality of life by allowing greater freedom, independence, and adaptability. When a part of a person's body is limited in some way, or the part is not present, orthotics and prosthetics can make a huge difference in their experience.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics and orthoses are devices that can enhance or correct the function of a part of the body.Prosthetists andorthotists are doctors who can prescribe the use of orthotics to people experiencing difficulties using their legs or arms because of a problem that has developed over the course of a person's life, such as an injury, or a condition that was present at birth. Orthotic devices can help the affected limb by making it easier for routine movements to be performed with minimal discomfort, inflammation, and inconvenience.

What Are Prosthetics?

While an orthotic device can help restore function to a limb with limitations, a prosthetic device, or prosthesis, can replace an arm or leg altogether, allowing a person who is missing a limb to continue living the life they are accustomed to. Advancements in the field of prosthetics have allowed countless people with prosthetic limbs or other prostheses to get back on track after experiencing a life-changing event, meeting and sometimes exceeding their expected level of physical mobility.

Types of Orthotics

Orthotics are available for a range of conditions, and these types of devices are available to enhance the upper regions and lower extremities of the body, as well as support the spine. Orthoses are available to assist with the comfort and movement of the arms, legs, and back.

There are both static orthotics and dynamic or functional orthotics. Static orthotics are appropriate for conditions in which movement of the affected limb is not desired, and dynamic orthotics permit and enhance the motion of the affected part of the body.

Foot orthotics are medical devices that are worn inside your shoes to compensate for biomechanical foot conditions by providing support for the foot. They are used to correct problems with walking, standing, and running.

Spinal Orthoses are braces that can assist in immobilizing the spine or keeping it straight. These devices can help reduce the pain that accompanies recovery from surgery, injury, or degenerative conditions.

Types of Prosthetics

Prosthetic devices are available to partially or fully replace a limb on both the upper and lower areas of the body. The limit of the biological limb, along with other personal factors, can help determine the type of prosthetic device that will best serve the person being fitted. On the leg, prosthetics can begin above the knee, below the knee, or compensate for an absent foot. On the arm, prosthetics can begin either above or below the elbow and can assist with gripping and holding functions.

Cosmetic prosthetics are both functional and very natural-looking. Using silicon molding and an artistic process of refining and color matching, these prosthetics take on an extremely realistic life-like quality that allows them to blend in with other body parts and help restore the confidence of the people who use them. Additionally, advances in technology have made the use of bionic limbs as prosthetics more common.

Getting an Orthotic or a Prosthetic Device

When a person needs orthotic or prosthetic services, aprosthetist or orthotist will work with them, along with their physician and anyone on their rehabilitation team, to create an ideal prosthetic plan of care. This includes making and fitting the device that is best suited to the person's needs and goals. After a plan is developed and a device is recommended, theprosthetist or orthotist can have the orthotic or prosthetic device fabricated.

Later, the device will be fitted to the person's body and adjusted to provide the most benefits possible. The specialist will then help the person learn to use and care for the device. As time goes by, they will help adjust the device and make repairs or replace parts as needed. The specialist will remain in close contact with the patient and their team to ensure that the provided care is helping the patient reach their goals.
